Why I'm On Board

Hi Everyone
Here's my thought. The more I get involved as a participant in mission and ministry in Northern Michigan, simply, the better I feel. I can't tell you how it blessed me, and the church I serve, First Presbyterian in Escanaba, when we got involved in two earth day events through Earth Keepers. I can't tell you (ditto) when we got involved with the Angel Mission Free Store in Calumet. I can't tell you (ditto) the joy it was to discover the Holy Transfiguration Skete in Eagle Harbor and what the brothers do there. Etc!
There are things going on!
So, why is it difficult to find out what's going on? Whatever reason that is, now we have a place where we can post brief articles and essays, and respond to them (comments).
I'm on board and I'm hoping that a lot of people with a heart to be the body of Christ at work in the Northern Michigan world will regularly drop by and we can be in touch.
Peace,
Scott
First Presbyterian/Escanaba

Scott I'd live to hear more about your earth day stuff and the brothers you mentioned. Who are they and what are they doing? thanks - Toby

Hi Toby
Thanks for the comment!
As you probably know the presbytery is a member of the Earthkeepers in the U.P., about the specifics of that covenant agreement, signed by a number of ecclesiastical leaders, including our Rev. David Van Dam, I am not at all knowledgable. But we have a missions committee co-chair who really is and I can get you two connected if you like.
Anyway for Earth Day 2006 we collected something like 35 pallets full of E-Waste (old computers and monitors and related junk) and a giant moving van came and took it away for environmentally responsible recycling downstate. For Earth Day 2007 we collected pharmaceuticals for incineration, as opposed to flushing into the sewage system, which is what happens to a pharmaceuticals by the tons and tons, and it is showing up in our lake water. Both of these were U.P.-wide Eartheepers events, and not inexpensive, and there were some grants by various folks, including Lutheran Thrivent Financial. Some of it hit the press on pc(usa) and there are a couple articles with photos. I think a Presbyterians Today article, I bet they can still be found. Anyway both events were hugely supported at our church and gave us a real boost in the Spirit.
The brothers I referred to are of the Society of St. John in Eagle Harbor. It's a monastery and church in the Byzantine rite of the Catholic church. Here is their web site:

They also run Jam Pot, right there on the road. We caught a service with them last summer when we were with the Angel Mission Free Store in Calumet. They offer a beautiful service, so much song and prayer, and holy communion to all the baptized. One of our group returned to do a retreat with them several days last fall, he had good things to say about it.
Thanks again and Peace Brother
